Something magical is taking place on 8th Ave between 56th and 57th Street. Bar Tweed, the latest bar in Shang Heights, opened to much fanfare on Friday night, stunning everyone with its originality and dedication to incredible cocktails.
Like its name, Bar Tweed is a play on the mid-to-late 1800’s, with sawdust on the floor and a no-stools bar layout, the throwback décor is meant to transport patrons back to the 19th century.
“I would say you could walk in there and do a total double take. Like, where am I?” asserted bar owner, Trevor Greene. “I think a lot of places now are so cookie cutter, and I was like ‘you know what? I’m not going to do that’. So we decided to draw from the past and make this a totally faithful recreation of how people used to party.”
Their specialty cocktails also recall a bygone period in NYC—all of them in fact—with each night of the week representing a different decade in the city’s history during happy hour.
“We wanted to keep the Gangs of New York feel, but also give people a taste of the city’s favorite drink from the twenties up through the 90’s.”
These drinks include the “Rum and *sniff* Coke” for 1980’s Mondays, the “Ginger Beer Highball” on 40’s Tuesdays , the “Filthy Martini” for jazzy 20’s Wednesdays, the “Brooklyn” (a play on the popular “Manhattan” cocktail) on 30’s Thursdays, and the “White Wine Spritzer” for Friday 90’s.
“The Spritzer is short of a joke. My Mom used to drink those, but we changed it up: it’s still refreshing and effervescent but there is a ton of alcohol in it.”
Most of the time though, the mood is strictly 5 Points, with an accordion player late night on weekends and a piano in the corner open for playing and sing-a-longs.
“We want to become a fun fixture for the neighborhood. A lot of myself has gone into this place and I just hope people will accept it and enjoy themselves.”
If the success of Manhattan spots like The Dead Rabbit is any indication, then Bar Tweed is here to stay!
